SIERPINSKI DICE / FIRST PAINTINGS

The Sierpinski Dice paintings are a reasoned illustration of how relationships are built between the two generators of the physical and discursive spaces of the work: the instinctive and the rational. Based on the "Chaos Game" (created by mathematician Wacław Sierpinski to build his famous triangle), Toledo produces abstract paintings that combine the shapes of an open dice with splashed color, through several superimposed layers. The integration between these two methods of abstract representation (the dripping and the geometric abstraction), which we can´t usually find in a pictorial image, makes each piece a map of tensions and ties. This series is the last of a stage in which Toledo began to use painting as an expressive medium, which aimed to explore the abstract representation as well as the instinctive and rational qualities of his creative process.
